Services
Medicare has many different parts and all of it can be really confusing.
We work with folks everyday that need help understanding Medicare and the way it works for their health and lifestyle.
Helps Pay For: Hospital care as an inpatient, critical access hospitals, small facilities that give limited outpatient and inpatient services to people in rural areas, skilled nursing facilities, hospice care and some health care.
Cost: Most people get Part A automatically when they turn 65.
They do not have to pay a monthly payment for Part A because they, or a spouse, paid Medicare taxes while they were working.
Medicare Supplements, also known as Medigap Plans, require a monthly premium and are an excellent choice for those who prefer to have a set amount they'll pay out each month for their hospitalization and medical care.
Medicare Supplements work with Original Medicare and can cover the balance of any Medicare Approved Service you receive.
For example when you visit your doctor, the doctor's office sends your charges to Medicare and once Medicare has approved the charges the balance is sent to your Medicare Supplement plan and, depending on the plan you've selected, some or all of the remaining balance is paid.
Medicare Advantage plans (MAPD), also known as Medicare Part C, combine Hospitalization, Medical (doctors, labs, etc.,) and Prescription Drug coverage into one plan.
There are also plans that do not include the Prescription Drug coverage (MA Only) for those who have other creditable drug coverage already in place, like through the Veteran's Administration (VA).
An MAPD works most similarly to the employer coverage you may be accustomed to by allowing you to carry one card for all of your doctor, hospital, and prescription drug visits.
Prescription Drug Plans (PDP) can be stand-alone or built into a Medicare Advantage plan.
Stand-alone PDPs most commonly work in conjunction with Original Medicare and a Medicare Supplement Plan (Medigap).
Prescription Drug plans, either stand-alone or as part of a Medicare Advantage plan, are required coverage when you become eligible for Part A or B.
Medicare requires continuous creditable drug coverage and many times you'll need to prove you had the coverage.
Penalties accrue monthly during the time that there is no creditable drug coverage in place and those penalties stay with you for the rest of your life, payable monthly along with your Prescription Drug Plan premium.
If you switch Medicare Advantage Plans or go back to Original Medicare with or without a Medicare drug plan, your new coverage will start the first day of the month after your new plan gets your request for coverage.
Keep in mind, if you go back to Original Medicare now, you may not be able to buy a Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policy.
It's important to understand and be confident in your Medicare coverage choices.
