If you listen to the TV and radio ads on auto insurance you would think the only thing you need to be worried about is SAVING MONEY.
But really, auto insurance is about protecting your financial well-being.
Thankfully you can have the coverage you need and still find ways to keep costs down.
As us about discounts for safe driving, auto-pay, pay in full discounts or bundling your home and auto.
Do you have a homeowners or renters insurance policy?
If so, is it with the same insurance company that provides your auto insurance?
If the answer is no, you're paying too much - for both policies.
Almost every insurance company that sells auto insurance wants its policyholders to also buy homeowners or renters insurance from that company.
These insurers offer so-called multi-policy discounts.
Usually, these discounts are at least 10% and some insurers apply the discounts to both the auto and the homeowners/renters policy.
Ever read your auto insurance policy?
If your answer is no, don't feel bad, 98% of insurance policy holders have never read their insurance contract.
That's right, it's a contract between you and the insurance company.
The only thing is you don't get to negotiate the terms.
You pay for the coverage, sign the paperwork, and the "insurance" company promises to uphold the contract.
In most cases, the insurance company does indeed uphold its end of the bargain.
The problems happen when you, the consumer, do not understand exactly what the contract, you signed, really says!
While it's true you could be making a costly mistake if you need the rental car coverage and don't buy it, you're also making a costly mistake if you buy it when you don't need it.
If you don't have collision and comprehensive, your personal auto policy won't cover damages to the rental car if it is in an accident, stolen, vandalized, collides with an animal or burns.
If your personal auto policy includes liability insurance, your policy will pay for any damage or injuries you cause to other cars or people - up to the limits of the policy.
