Knight-Free Insurance Agency was founded in 1943 as the Paul R. Knight Insurance Agency. Its offices were located in the Fuller Building, present location of the Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce. In 1970 Elliot Free, Paul Knight's son-in-law, joined the firm. In 1971 they formed a partnership, the Knight-Free Insurance Agency, which was incorporated into Knight-Free Insurance Agency, Inc. in 1976.
Paul Knight retired in 1982, and Elliot Free took over management of the agency. By 1984, additional space was needed, and Knight-Free's offices were moved to their present location in downtown Cullman's restored historic Ice House. Wescoat Free, Elliot's son and Paul Knight's grandson, joined the agency in 1993 and purchased it in 2003.
