Medicare is a health insurance program of the United States federal government primarily covering healthcare needs of those who are 65+ years of age, people with disabilities who have been receiving social security disability benefits (SSDI) for two years, those affected by kidney failure (end-stage renal disease - ESRD), and those who have ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis aka Lou Gehrig disease).
This article provides an overview of Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance), including coverage, costs and enrollment periods.
Medicare is a comprehensive healthcare program, distinctly segmented into four parts - Part A (Hospital Insurance), Part B (Medical Insurance), Part C (Medicare Advantage plans) and Part D (Prescription Drug plans).
Medicare Part A provides coverage for inpatient hospitalization, skilled nursing care, hospice care and some home health care.
It does not include custodial care or long-term care.
This articles provides an overview of Medicare Part B (medical insurance), including coverage, costs and enrollment periods.
Part B (medical insurance) provides for outpatient care, doctors' services, laboratory tests and X-rays, durable medical equipment, and rehabilitative services such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology services.
It also covers several preventive services.
There is a long list of services and products you are eligible for if you are enrolled in Part B. If you or your spouse are still working and have equivalent group health coverage at the workplace, you can delay your enrollment.
Instead of enrolling in Medicare Parts A and B, you may go for Part C, called Medicare Advantage (MA), and combine it with a Prescription Drug Plan.
Part C coverage includes services under both Part A and Part B and often includes additional benefits as well.
Many Part C plans also combine prescription drug coverage.

There are two primary ways you can get Medicare coverage.
One is to go with Medicare Parts A & B and supplement it with a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plan and/or a Prescription Drug Plan.
Medicare Part A and Part B do not include coverage for prescription drugs.
This coverage can be obtained through a Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) also known as Part D. This article provides an overview of Medicare Part D.
Medicare Parts A & B do not include coverage for prescription drugs.
This coverage can be obtained through a Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) also known as Part D. There are two ways to do this - enroll in a standalone Part D Plan or get PDP coverage through a MA-PD Plan which covers both Part C and Part D benefits.
