As one of ten children in the family of Simon and Lydia Smucker, he attended Kent State University.
Here he met and later married Blanche Hillman of Youngstown, Ohio.
In 1936, the couple moved to Columbus, Ohio where he pursued his "love of teaching" while Blanche stayed home to raise their family.
Years later, the family moved in 1946 to Plain City, Ohio where the last two of their six children were born.
In the 1950s, Orrin opened an office in their home representing Mennonite Mutual Aid.
