There are two kinds of Smoke Detectors~and you should use both.
The most common and the least expensive smoke alarms are Ionization alarms.
They sound more quickly when a flaming fast fire occurs.
The second type of smoke alarm is the Photoelectric.
They are quicker at sensing smoldering, smokey fires.
These are a little more expensive than the ionization alarms.
The best smoke alarm available is the Combination Alarm that uses the technology from both types.
Smoke alarms need to be replaced and updated every 8-10 years.
